Active South Dublin Sports Awards 2023 in association with The Echo. 

All of our monthly sports stars are in the running for Sports Star of the Year award.

The Sports Awards are supported by Active South Dublin and South Dublin County Council.

 

January Sports Star

Willie Coyne

It was all smiles for Willie Coyne who claimed the Irish Rallycross Championship crown in Mondello Park in January. The Tallaght man, in his Opel Corsa, pipped closest rival Peter McGarry in his Volvo for the title with Willie’s brother Michael securing third position overall.

February Sports Star

Rhasidat Adeleke

Tallaght Athletic Club member Rhasidat Adeleke smashed her own Irish 400m record in February, while also clocking the fastest women’s indoor time in American collegiate history.

March Sports Star

Ann Woodlock

Donore Harriers Athletics Club legend Ann Woodlock become a world champion in March when she was first over the line in the W80 3,000 meters in Toruń, Poland on the first day of the ninth World Indoor Masters Championships.

Jack Woolley

Returning to the location where South Dublin Taekwondo secured their first ever World Taekwondo ranking event medal in 2012, the club had more success in April when they landed their most recent world ranking medal.

Tallaght Martial Arts Nicole Bannon was top of her game at the Turkish Open 2023 in Istanbul last month which had over 3,700 entries from 40 countries.

Jodie Browne

Tallaght's Jodie Browne was narrowly beaten by a Slovenian fighter in her Point Fighting (60kg) semi-final, but came away with a bronze medal at the European Games in Poland.

Ellen Walshe

Ellen Walshe from Templeogue secured her spot on the plane to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris next summer, after hitting the qualification time with a record-breaking swim at the World Aquatics Championships in July.

Hannah Tyrrell

Hannah Tyrrell produced a brilliant performance in the All-Ireland Senior Football Final as Dublin overcame Kerry to win the Brendan Martin Cup. Hannah, from Clondalkin, kicked eight first half points, including four from play as she picked up the Player of the Match Award.

Cara Byrne

Cara Byrne from Newland’s Taekwon-Do was celebrating in September when she became world champion after winning gold in sparring at the World Championships in Finland.

October Sports Star

Katie Sheldon

Katie Sheldon was on point as she played a pivotal part in helping Ireland to a first ever gold medal at the World Darts Federation (WDF) World Cup in Esbjerg, Denmark in October.

Joshua Olaniyan

Joshua Olaniyan secured the 75kg National Elite championship for the first time in Jobstown Boxing club’s history.

Daire Flock

It was a great year for young Motorsport driver Daire Flock who claimed the Junior Saloon Car Championship.
