St Aidan’s students give voice to views

By Mary Dennehy

ST AIDAN’S Community School in Brookview, which was the first school in Ireland to allow girls to wear trousers, is continuing to encourage students to have a voice – with students last week electing their new student council.

The first secondary school in Ireland to not only allow girls to wear trousers but also to have a student council, St Aidan’s hold democracy at its core and last week students elected a new Student Council to represent their views.

St Aidans Vote

Teacher Claire Fealy, Student Council co-ordinator with the school, said: “In St Aidan’s we really value the student voice and have always seen the Student Council as central to school life.

“Some 16 members of the student body from all year groups were elected to be members of the council for a term of one year.

“They have taken part in training and held their first meeting as a new group last Monday.

“Projects so far this year include, promoting better hydration in school, continuing to improve our already excellent canteen, reviewing relevant school policies and sending formal condolences to French authorities, schools and students following the recent tragedy in Paris.”

Timmy Adesanya Student Council Chair said: “I really love being on the Student Council – it is not run by teachers, it is just supported by them. I have always felt that the teachers and staff of our school listen to us and want us to be involved. We have great plans for this year.”
