St Matthew’s BC opens its doors to female boxers
ST MATTHEW’S Boxing Club opened its doors to female boxers for the first time this month after work was completed on new women’s changing and shower rooms there.
The Ballyfermot club had secured funding from the sports capital unit to allow them to build this facility.
A big part of the Ballyfermot community for the last 30 years, Matthew’s had, in 2003, been provided with their own clubhouse on Drumfinn Road.
And with the rise in demand for female boxing, Club Manager Robbie Murray pursued the project with the help of the club committee and management team.
“We have been very lucky to have great support from the Ballyfermot community and, without that, this would not have happened,” stressed the former club boxer and undefeated Irish professional boxing champion.
Georgina Ryan is now the club’s first female coach and is undertaking full training.
She has been a volunteer in St Matthew’s for the last two years and has been a key figure in many of the club’s fundraising events.
Six-year-old Poppy O’Brien from Ballyfermot was the first to line out in the boxing academy the club runs for 5-9-year-olds on Sundays.
The club is eager to get more female coaches involved and anyone interested can contact Robbie on 087 2780316
St Matthew’s Boxing Club opens for boys and girls from 10 up on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 6pm.
