St Patrick’s Parade committee up their game in preparations for their ambitious 30th year

PREPARATIONS for the St Patrick’s Day Parade in Lucan are well underway and this year it is going to be a big one as they celebrate their 30th year of the parade, reports Hayden Moore.
The parade committee are looking for organisations in Lucan to “celebrate your anniversary with us” as part of the 30th birthday.

Since its inception back in 1991 the parade in Lucan has been a driving force in bringing the community of Lucan back together after the construction of the N4 primary road created a physical division through the middle of the town.
That division inspired the town to come together all those years ago and create a cultural event each year that brought the divided Lucan, old and new, together every year.
The committee massively succeeded in their ambitions with 8,000 spectators, 40 floats and 1,800 people taking part in the festivities in 2019.
Community groups such as the local scouts, GAA, boxing and dance clubs all typically take part while marching bands also put their stamp on the celebrations.
With the year that is in it, the committee have their eyes on creating yet another colourful, exciting and entertaining parade for St Patrick’s Day on March 17.
But planning the event is not something that is pulled together the month before, the team come together in September to review the previous year’s parade and lay the groundwork for the next one.
Three founder members make up part of the 12-person committee, with stalwarts Paddy Brady, Barbara Cummins and Mary Meehan all still involved after 30 years.
Supported by South Dublin County Council, An Garda Síochána and traders from throughout Lucan, the parade is on the hunt for volunteers, with 50 needed to take part on the day.
