Storm Emma community volunteers to be honoured
By Maurice Garvey
VOLUNTEERS who helped homeless people survive Storm Emma in Cherry Orchard, are to be honoured for their selfless work, at a ceremony in the Mansion House.
An incredible 43 staff and volunteers answered the call put out prior to the storm by Cherry Orchard Community Centre.
Volunteers will be honoured for work during Storm Emma
Over the course of 48 hours, volunteers provided hot meals and assistance to some 13 homeless people, who took refuge in the centre.
David O’Donovan, Cherry Orchard Project Manager, Dublin City Council, said he would “rather have the building open and empty than have it closed and the community struggling.”
“Some of the volunteers had experience or had been down that road before, and we linked in with homeless services.”
The centre remained open during the worst of the storm conditions, from Thursday morning 8am, until Saturday afternoon 3.30pm.
Accommodation arrangements were made with homeless services, before the 13 guests left the building on the Saturday.
O’Donovan praised the volunteers for their work and said each one will be presented with a personalised frame award.
The recognition night takes place at the Mansion House on Thursday, April 19, at 7.30pm.
