Streets of Dublin captured for Ballyfermot Library exhibition
By Mary Dennehy
A LOCAL photographer has captured life on the streets of Dublin beautifully and honestly in a photographic exhibition that was on show in Ballyfermot Library until the end of November – which included these images of a sulky race in Ballyfermot.
Born in Ballyfermot in 1961, Greg Mathews has had a varied and interesting career path, which includes a mechanic and a firefighter.
It wasn’t until five years ago he turned the lens on himself and allowed his lifelong interest in art to lead him into photography – with Greg recently being hailed Irish Street Photographer of the Year 2015.
“I don’t just consider myself a photographer, I consider myself an artist”, Greg said.
“The view finder in the camera is my canvas and the light used to capture each image is my paintbrush.
“I use photography as a form of self-expression and I make my pictures for everyone.”
He added: “Photography is a passion and everything about photography is enjoyable for me.
“When I’m concentrating on taking a shot, I always feel like I’m in a bit of a trance like state. Everything around me disappears and all my thoughts are zoned in on what I’m trying to achieve and capture with the camera.
“Photography is such a subjective genre and its path has taken me on a journey of both self-discovery and creativity.
“My work is deeply personal and is not driven by any commercial agenda but is created and delivered from the heart. It’s my world and you’re welcome to it.”
