Students at Cloverhill Education Centre reach out to nursing homes
By Mary Dennehy
STUDENTS of Cloverhill Education Centre reached out to three local nursing homes by making more than 100 Christmas wreaths as presents for residents.
The project, which was a collaboration with the Lucan community and Lucan Garda Station, arose after an appeal was launched locally for donations for the residents of neighbouring nursing homes.
Teachers Noelle O'Neill and Caitríona McGrath, Governor Tony Harris, Community Gardai Noreen and Tommy, Chief Officer Dave Mulligan and School Officer Ian Durnin
Caitríona McGrath, a teacher in the education centre told The Echo: “After a very sad and lonely year for many residents, a local project emerged to try and bring some joy to their Christmas.
“The students of Cloverhill Education Centre were informed and more than willing to help.
“From one residential institution to another, the students can relate to the many feelings that have occurred over the last year.
“Limited visits, limited access and video calls have become the norm for nursing homes and prisons.”
According to Caitríona, fellow teacher Noelle O’Neill suggested making Christmas wreaths and the creative gift making began.
The project, which was led by one student as part of his Gaisce Bronze Award, took place over four weeks, and has resulted in more than 100 unique and individually wrapped wreaths being gifted.
Lucan Community Garda Noreen Barrett collected the thoughtful donation and is delivering them to nursing homes in the run-up to Christmas.
The project was supported by Head Teacher Michael Roddy and Governor Harris.
