Summer camp ‘as Gaeilge’ a great hit

TWENTY-seven young people attended the Feachtas, an Irish Language youth organisation-run Campa Samhraidh Feachtas Tamhlachta in Scoil Santain recently. The camp ran for five days with pupils ranging in age from eight up to 16.

“The Feachtas summer camp in Scoil Santain ran for the second year this August. We nearly doubled the amount of children taking part this year, from 15 to to 27.

"Of course, the support of the local community was invaluable, especially the Principal and the board of Scoil Santain, and also from the funding received from Foras na Gaeilge,” said Loretta Ní Churraighín, Feachtas Manager.

“It was brilliant to see and hear 27 young people (and young local leaders) from Tallaght all conversing and taking part in youth activities through the medium of Irish. We look forward to having an even bigger camp next year.

“The purpose of the camp is to allow children to be comfortable conversing, and having fun, through the Irish language.

“The youth club will re-open on Monday, September 24 until mid June. The youth club is open to all young people from the age of 10 to 18. It will be in Scoil Santain.”

A broad range of activities were organised during the week of the camp, a circus workshop, art, sports, a trip to Tayto Park and the camps own talent show.

The camp was funded by Foras na Gaeilge, and the Department of Children and Youth Affairs.
