Suspect van was thought to be dumping in stream

AVONBEG DSC 1821 resizedTHE vigilance of Tallaght residents was evident this week when they spotted what they suspected was a construction crew dumping waste into the Whitestown stream.

The eco-warriors were straight onto The Echo with images of a construction van with two tankers on the back placing hoses into the stream, which runs between Avongbeg and the Tallaght By-pass.

However, South Dublin County Council has moved to allay the concerns of residents by confirming that the contractor is taking water from the stream to water the turf lawn and landscape features of a new natural play space beside Scoil Santain.

A spokesman for the council said: “The construction company is taking water from the stream to water some of the new features of the play space – it is not waste from the site.

“There wouldn’t be a lot of waste from a site such as this, with construction crews pumping water from the stream for landscaping purposes.

“This would be a common enough practice and there would be no negative impact to wildlife in the stream.”

He added: “If anybody has any further questions or concerns they should give the council a call.”
One resident told The Echo: “It just looked really suspicious as they had the hose going through a gap in the railings but it’s good to hear that they were not dumping waste.

“I have seen trout in the stream but they are further up at the waterfall, so I don’t think that taking water would disturb the stream too much.”

AAA councillor Kieran Mahon, who lives in the area, told The Echo that he raised resident’s concerns with the council’s environment department just to make sure that, in regards to the Whitestown stream, everything is being done under the proper regulations and guidelines.
