Take care on roads as first snow fall of 2024 hits county

THE first snow fall of 2024 arrived on Friday morning with a status yellow rain warning in place for Dublin as we head into the weekend. 

Gardai are warning of dangerous conditions on the roads, particularly on the M50 at Junction 13 which is ‘very treacherous’.

Motorists are advised by gardai to drive slowly, have lights on and leave a good braking distance. 

Roads are very slippy throughout the county particularly in housing estates, with pedestrians and drivers urged to take care and avoid travelling if possible.

Dublin Fire Brigade are reporting poor road conditions on high ground and are warning motorists to drive slowly, steer and brake gently.

South Dublin County Council had gritting crews on hill routes on Thursday evening – and have confirmed that crews will be out gritting hill routes again from 7pm on Friday evening and on Saturday morning at 5am. 

The local authority has encouraged people to ‘travel safe’ if out and about.

Met Eireann has issued a Status Yellow snow-ice warning for a number of counties today, including Dublin. 

A Status Yellow rain warning also comes into effect at 3pm today for Dublin, will remain in place until 3pm on Saturday. 

According to Met Eireann, persistent rain with a mix of sleet at times is expected.

This could lead to localised flooding and hazardous travelling conditions.
