Tallaght CS storm back to lift Leinster Shield

TALLAGHT Community School was celebrating last week after their Under 19 soccer team beat Chanel College 4-1 in TUD Blanchardstown to raise the Leinster Senior Shield.

Wayne Grehan’s side had to battle back from a goal down to complete a successful campaign that also included victories over Collinstown and Oatlands along the way.

Indeed Tallaght had turned a one-goal deficit on its head by the halftime break, captain Adam Burns serving up the equaliser when he broke through and superbly chipped the Chanel netminder.

And it was Hamzat Salam who edged them in front for the first time before the break when he came in at the back post to turn home a delivery into the box.

Tallaght doubled their lead 12 minutes into the second half when centre half Matthew Toolan superby despatched a loose ball to the top corner from just inside the box.

Salam completed the scoring when he applied the finishing touch to a swift counter attack in the 70th minute.

Delighted with the performance of his side, manager Grehan said “We had a bad start to the season losing a few games, but the lads stuck to their principals and we knew we had the patience and the ability to hurt them [Chanel].

“To go a goal down and then come straight back and score, the lads showed great heart. It was a great performance” he told The Echo.

Made up mostly of a sixth and fifth year students, the squad also included a number of transition year players which augurs well for their prospects next season.
