Tallaght declared ‘clean to European norms’ according to latest IBAL survey

Tallaght has been declared 'clean to European norms' according to the latest survey conducted by the business group, Irish Business Against Litter (IBAL).

The group said there have been huge strides made in Tallaght over the last few years, in particular, an improvement was noted along the Lucan – Tallaght Road.

Belgard Square East was described as an exceptionally good site, while the car park at the Square Shopping Centre scored very well, as in many previous IBAL Surveys.

Sean Walsh Park was very fresh in appearance – however, the pond behind the recycle area in the public park was heavily littered and a pollution hazard given the duck and swan life.

One area of concern in Tallaght was Westpark, where there was a heavy litter presence throughout the residential development.

As well as plastic bottles, coffee cups, sweet papers and cans there were some discarded green plastic chairs, some with missing legs, indicating the discarding nature of same.

The grass had recently been cut but as the litter hadn’t been cleared before the cutting the result was ‘chopped up’ litter.

Speaking about the latest survey, IBAL’s Conor Horgan said although we enjoy cleaner cities and towns compared to 15 years ago, the issue of illegal dumping is the new litter.

He said: “Dumping appears to be on the increase, and the more we ask people to pay for waste disposal the greater an issue it is likely to become. It may not be as widespread, but dumping is the new litter in many respects.”
