Over 70 make tracks at Tallaght Mile for Cancer Support Group
By Mary Dennehy
MORE than 70 people took to the tracks of Tallaght Athletic Club in aid of the Tallaght Cancer Support Group - with all money raised going towards the provision of free services, including a new group for people bereaved by cancer.
Now in its fourth year, the Tallaght Mile is run by the Tallaght Athletic Club and involves a fun mile run or walk in aid of the local support group.
Growing year on year, more than 70 people took to the tracks on Saturday, January 13, with participants including runners, joggers, walkers and families strolling with young children and buggies.
Viv O’Hanlon, who is a member of Tallaght AC and a volunteer with Tallaght Cancer Support Group, said: “The event was great this year, and we had lots of children and families walking the mile.
“There’s not a person in the world not touched by cancer and I have to say people living locally are always so good.
“They always come out to support us and really are very generous and kind.”
Established in 2007, the Tallaght Cancer Support Group provides support for all cancer patients, their families and friends from its base in Trustus House on Main Street, Tallaght.
Francis McNulty, of the Tallaght Cancer Support Group (TCSG), said: “We can’t thank everyone enough.
“We raised more than €400 on the day through bucket collections and are still waiting for sponsorship cards to come in this week.
“The event raised €1,030 last year and we’re on target to reach that amount again.”
She added: “We would like to thank everybody who participated on the day, Tallaght Athletic Club for their support and SuperValu in Ballinteer for providing refreshments.
“Thanks also to the Allen family who came up with the idea of the run four years ago and who continue to help build the event every year.”
According to the Francis the money raised will be used to continue the provision of free supports and services, which includes a new, monthly support group for people bereaved by cancer.
The group, which is for people who have lost someone to cancer, will meet on the first Thursday of every month – with the first meeting being held on February 1 at 11.30am. All welcome.
