Tallaght University Hospital and car parking

TALLAGHT University Hospital’s recently acquired planning permission for a number of items, including car-parking spaces, is not related to public car-parking “as such”, according to a hospital spokesperson, following on from concerns about hospital parking fees.

Last March, the Minister for Health, Simon Harris, ordered a national review of hospital car-parking charges after a number of advocacy groups and members of the public voiced their concerns about the burden that parking charges can place on people accessing the hospital.

Tallaght University Hospital was granted planning permission last month for a number of developments, including an 85-space car park, the construction of a new pedestrian route into the hospital from the gate at the Hospital Luas stop and the relocation of the taxi rank.

When asked if this 85-space car park would have any effect on car parking fees, a spokesperson from the hospital said: “The proposed development is not related to public car-parking as such but allows for a number of changes which will be hugely beneficial to our patients, visitors, staff and environment.

“With regard to car parking charges, the hospital reviewed charges earlier this year and found them to be in-line or below the rates charged at other Dublin hospitals.

“The hospital also offers a very competitive rate for a monthly pass and day pass (allowing for multiple entries).

“Minister for Health, Simon Harris, earlier this year requested the HSE to carry out a review of hospital car-parking charges with the aim of establishing clear national guidelines.

“We await the outcome of that review to see if there will be any implications for the hospital to consider.”

The spokesperson confirmed that there is an allocation for staff car-parking spaces as part of the permitted development.
