Tamhlacht FC are up for the Challenge

TAMHLACHT FC cruised into round two of this seasons UCFL Challenge Cup when they met a helpless Celtic Park and rattled the net eight times without reply.

In a totally one-sided affair in Jobstown Park the home side set out to do what they had to do, get the job done, and by half time the game was already over.

It’s been a really tough few weeks for the Celts as they have yet to register a point in Division 3B, and the last thing they needed was a trip to Tallaght to face a Division 1 high flying side.

But, unfortunately, that is cup football and you have to take what you are given, and it was Tamhlacht who grabbed the opportunity to with both hands.

Stand-out player on the day was Gary Sutton who netted four, and set up two, of their eight goals and walked off to an ovation, and rightly so, when he was withdrawn with 10 minutes remaining.

The home side wasted no time in setting about their business and the only surprising thing was that it took 15 minutes from them to break the deadlock.

Sutton opened their account when Chris Clarke set him up and, before the visitors could recover, they were 2-0 down after Clarke’s header was well saved but Jay Walsh was on hand to tap home.

Two became three fairly quickly as Sutton slipped the ball into Conor Murphy for a chance he was never going to miss, while on the stroke of half time Sutton bagged his second from the penalty spot.

You had to fear for the visitors as the second half started as, although the game was in the bag, there was no let-up from the home side.

They matched their goals from the opening half when Sutton brought his tally to four, Clark got on the score sheet and Copnor Murphy rounded off the scoring with five minutes remaining.

A tough day for Celtic Park, and one they will want to forget, but at least they didn’t drop their heads and can only hope that their fortunes will turn sooner rather than later.
