Taxi man Gerry’s Toyota Corolla is out of this world

A TAXI driver has described his car as a ‘moon buggy’ as it has clocked up enough mileage to travel to the moon and back – and is still going strong.
Tallaght man Gerry O’Connor has been a taxi driver since 1989, and he has had his trusty Toyota Corolla since 2007, which has so far clocked up 695,000kms and still has its original engine.
Gerry’s motor, which he bought brand new in Tadg Riordan Motors over ten years ago, recently passed the NCT and gets serviced several times a year by Eric Stokes in Tadg Riordan Motors on the Tallaght Bypass, ensuring it will continue to carry passengers with ease and reliability.
Gerry told The Echo: “Taxi miles are hard miles because you’re constantly stopping and starting.”
He added: “I swear by Toyota – my last three cars have all been Toyota.
“Tadg Riordan Motors have serviced the car since day one, and I must’ve had 41 or 42 services by now as I get the car serviced every 15,000 miles.”
Toyota cars are a popular choice among taxi drivers, according to Gerry, with the Toyota Prius and the Toyota Avensis being the cars of choice for many taxi drivers.
Talking about his current car, Gerry said: “I’m going to start calling it the moon buggy because it’s got enough mileage to have gone to the moon and back!
“I’m going to keep this car for another year and see how it goes at the NCT next January.”
Looking ahead, Gerry says that he hopes to buy a Toyota Prius Hybrid in future, but is content with his reliable Toyota Corolla at the minute, which has proved itself to be a reliable motor and a wise purchase.
