Teammates remember Ciarán at 7s tournament

HUNDREDS have come together to play a gaelic football tournament in memory of the late Ciarán Carr, 11-years on from his sudden death.

Ciarán was a prolific gaelic footballer with Round Tower GAA and the Clondalkin club has launched a new annual 7s tournament to take place in his honour on the anniversary of his death.

Six teams made up of male players of the past and present competed in the new tournament, which took place on Saturday, January 21 at Monastery Road.

Two months before his 21st birthday, on January 20, 2012, Ciarán Carr collapsed while training with the senior football team in Round Tower.

Despite the efforts of his teammates, coaches and the emergency services who responded to the incident, Ciarán was pronounced dead shortly after arriving at Tallaght Hospital.

A young and healthy man, Ciarán’s death was attributed to Sudden Adult Death Syndrome (SADS) and it shocked the Clondalkin community.

Having already booked his birthday party, the family decided to go ahead with the night and turned it into ‘A Night for Ciarán’ – with the aim of raising funds for the CRY Foundation. €24,000 was raised in his honour.

Ciarán Carr sadly passed away 11-year-ago

Following the fundraising drive, his parents Gemma and Philip Carr, along with friends and family, put together a plan to ensure an incident like this would not happen again in Towers.

This plan evolved into the Ciarán Carr Foundation, a charity committed to raising awareness, screening young players, teaching first aid and raise funds for cardiac related equipment.
