Three weeks ago, he told Judge Patricia McNamara that if he was in Ireland he would like to play for Shamrock Rovers but outside Ireland, Manchester United.

The teenager, who has an address in Rathfarnham, had pleaded guilty to assaulting his mother at his home address on May 5, 2017.

The court had heard that on May 5 last, the teenager’s mother had called to Rathfarnham Garda Station to report that she had been assaulted by her son.

At noon that day, the mother had put her hand on her son and asked him to stop being verbally abusive.

The teenager then attempted to head butt his mother a number of times and grazed her head. He made contact with his mother once. The mother had moved her head so not to receive the full impact of the head butt.

She had received some scratches to her head, the court had heard.

The case was before Judge McNamara for a victim impact statement and for a plea in mitigation.

Judge McNamara asked the teenager’s mother how she was.

The mother replied: “I have been better”.

Judge McNamara told the teenager: “You are a very capable young man but you have gone off the rails.”

Sergeant Michael Aherne told the judge that the teenager is still coming to the attention of the gardai.

The mother said her son is now in homeless accommodation after being removed from the home by social services.

The teenager’s solicitor, Michael Hennessy, said it was a very difficult situation.

Judge McNamara told the teenager: “I’m very disappointed with you. The path you are taking. I’m very disappointed that this has happened.”

She adjourned the case for four weeks for a probation report and to hear the victim impact statement.
