Templeogue kick off Division Two campaign
TEMPLEOGUE Synge Street are gearing up for the kick off of the Women’s Football leagues this Wednesday.
The club possesses three adult women’s team with a Division 2 side, Division 5 side and a Division 11 side.
The Division 2 team will take on St Maur’s in the first game of the campaign while Division 5 sees a clash with Naomh Barrog. Division 11 has them playing Ballyfermot Gaels.
The senior side will have a tough campaign ahead of them with their chief aim being to remain in Division 2.
There will be stiff opposition with Fingallians and Cuala arriving in the division after being relegated from the top tier the previous year.
Head Coach Gabrielle Ruane touched on the upcoming campaign ahead.
“We’ll be up against it, primarily our aim is to stay in Division 2. It could be tougher than last year. We’d like to improve on the championship last year. We found it a bit of a struggle so that’s primarily our focus. Staying in the league and performing better than we did last year in the championship.”
The club has seen expansive growth in its women’s section over the last number of years.
Forming in 2003, the women’s teams within the club have expanded with three adult teams being fielded which are supplemented by players coming in through minor level.
The underage component of the club has also seen healthy growth with three U15s teams currently being fielded also.
The Minors are currently playing in Division 2 and won the Division 1 U16 championship only a couple of years ago which spells a bright future for the club.
The game’s taking place this Wednesday will also see a minute of silence for Mary O’Connor, Dublin LGFA Secretary of St Brigids GAA club who passed away on March 22nd of this year.
O’Connor’s impact stretched far beyond the parameters of her own club and her work played a vital role in the growth of Ladies football in Dublin over the past decade or so.
Her contribution to the sport was recognised on a national level in 2024 where she was awarded the President’s award by the GAA, a fitting recognition for a lifetime devoted to growing Ladies’ Football.
