Templeogue Under 12s make it a double
ONLY a week after raising the Dublin Under 12 Boys Basketball Cup, Temple-ogue added the league title to their roll of honour this season after edging a thrilling 36-33 win over Dublin Lions.
Captain Jacob Fazande held his nerve to land two late free throws that effectively saw them over the line against their Clondalkin rivals whose only previous defeat in the league had come at the hands of Templeogue and who could still have drawn level had they managed to turn the tables this time around.
Templeogue were dealt a blow just before tip-off when Ben Kavanagh was forced to withdraw due to an untimely illness.
With Jack Finn starting this much-anticipated match at point alongside Alex Puiu, Charles Faure, Daragh O’Toole and Felix McMahon, Templeogue got off to a good start and closed the quarter eight points up.
The second quarter crew of Eoin Fegan, Eoin Murray, Jack Doran, Ralph Erin and Jacob Fazande at point guard managed to maintain that advantage to lead 21-13 at the halftime recess.
Yet Lions were not about to give up the chase and forced Templeogue into a number of turnovers that helped see them draw level with the cup winners heading into the final quarter.
The newly-crowned cup champions, however, refused to buckle and fought back into the narrowest of leads before Fazande’s free throws brought them home.
Unbeaten in 16 league and cup games over the course of the season, this Templeogue outfit, under Coach Jay Fazande, will soon be heading to Inverness for an invitational tournament against sides from right across the UK.
