Tenacious Joyce cards a gritty win

JOHN Joyce was very encouraged by the tenacious form he produced in making it two from two in his young pro-boxing career.

The Lucan welterweight emerged from his battle with Belfast’s James Gorman a 40-36 winner, despite having sustained a bad cut over his left eye following a clash of heads.

Joyce landed some big shots, including a left hook in both of the opening two rounds, but, credit to Gorman, he weathered that and battled back.

He got in close and kept Joyce on guard, but the Dubliner was a lot more industrious and deserved of his victory.

“I was very happy with my performance” Joyce told The Echo.

“He was a tough experienced guy with a lot of fighting knowledge. Even with a bad cut over my eye and blurred vision from early in the fight I did really well.

“I learned so much about myself as a fighter and how fit I am to be able to throw a high volume of punches over four rounds.

“I’m hoping that if my eye heals up good I’ll be in the ring again in November if not February all going well,” he added.
