Text-alert system will help stop parking bay misuse

A NEW Text-alert system to combat misuse of accessible parking bays is being piloted in Lucan village. The system was promoted by Councillor Vicki Casserly who is also a campaigner for inclusion and disability rights with her husband Dan and their son, James.
Cllr Casserly told The Echo: “The text-alert system is being piloted in Lucan village. In Perth in Australia there is a fine of AUD$1,000 (€633) if you park in an accessible bay, so people don’t do it. We have to get the message out there that the blue permit is for the holder of the permit not for the car.”

Cllr Casserly added: “We just want to promote responsible use of accessible parking bays. A permit user may need that space so that they can go to work, go shopping or just to meet a friend.”
Cllr Casserly also told The Echo that South Dublin County Council is currently looking into a developing a smartphone app which will map all the accessible parking bays in the county.
She said: “It’s the way forward in that you will know what accessible parking bays are available.”
