The Great Rope of Tallaght – 400 weave 1.5km rope to wind way through tallaght

One group’s ambition to pull different facets of the community together has materialised with The Great Rope of Tallaght.
Tallaght Community Arts has brought over 400 people from different schools, community groups and individuals to make a 1.5-kilometre-long rope that will wind its way through the streets of Tallaght.

The rope will start at the Katharine Tynan Memorial Plot (The Dancers statue in Tallaght village), with the first section of it being woven by St Mary’s NS in Greenhills, and will meander its way down the main street of Tallaght village, through The Square Shopping Centre to go up a level and end out at Chamber Square beside Rua Red.
It will remain out along the route from Thursday, June 13 when there will be a commencement event at the Tynan memorial until Saturday, June 15, when there will be a celebration event in Chamber Square as part of Cruinniú na nÓg. Tony Fegan, Director of Tallaght Community Arts, caught up with The Echo this week to tell us about how the project began almost three months ago.
“We actually started it because we were thinking if we could make a really long rope – we have 400 people from different community groups of people both young and old,” said Tony.
“It is a collective enterprise of groups from all over. Tallaght is a big place with many different groups that would not be in the public eye – like there are inter-cultural groups from Clondalkin, kickboxing clubs, knitting groups with elder women and so on – this is to celebrate them.”
There will be 16 rope bearers that will offer up information all along the route while children and families are invited to participate in the completion of the rope on the Saturday, where there will also be a DJ and more to ring in the celebrations.
“We are giving the hard work of 400 people to the stewardship of the people of Tallaght and we trust that they will take great care of it during the three days that it’s out there,” concluded Tony.
