Three Rock topple Glenanne in derby
THREE Rock Rovers came out tops 3-1 over local rivals Glenanne HC in a wet Grange Road at the weekend in the EYHL League.
With chances falling to both team in the first quarter, it was Rovers that took the lead.
A swift attack down the right from Rovers in the 22nd minute forced a good save from Glenanne goalkeeper David Lawless, but the ball fell kindly to James Walker who’s first time bunt ended in the Glens net.
And that is how it stayed for the first quarter and in the second quarter followed much of the same story – the visitors controlling the possession, patiently creating chances, whilst Rovers would hit Glenanne at speed on the counter.
The score remained the same 1-0 at half time with both sets of forwards creating opportunities.
Glenanne came out stronger in the third quarter, creating numerous chances and winning several penalty corners.
Corner specialist Shane O’Donoghue getting the equaliser on in the 37th minute from a drag flick at the end of the third quarter and it was all to play for in the final quarter.
Ex-South-African international Jody Hosking gave Rovers the lead again with 12 minutes to go with a converted penalty corner.
Sensing an opportunity to create an overload, Glenanne pulled their goalkeeper to play with 11 outfield players.
Despite numerous efforts however they were unable to score and the decision backfired when Ali Empey scored a 3rd goal for Rovers with one minute of play remaining to secure the three points for the home team.
Next up for Glenanne is Monkstown HC in the EYHL on Saturday 7 October in St Andrews College, Booterstown.
