Thrilling finish to Lucan Harriers 5km

A THRILLING finish to the Lucan 5km on Sunday saw Peter Somba of Dunboyne AC catching Mick Clohisey of Raheny Shamrock AC with about 100 metres to go and then holding on for victory in a sprint for the line.

Somba’s time was 25 minutes 5 seconds, with Clohisey just one second behind.

Third in 25:28 was David Scanlon of Rathfarnham WSAF AC in 25:28.

Laura Buckley made it a Dunboyne double when she finished first woman in 30:35, with Aisling O’Connor of Rathfarnham WSAF AC second in 31:33 and Breda Smyth of host club Lucan Harriers third and first W50 in 34:39.

In a closely fought men’s team competition, Lucan Harriers and Raheny Shamrock AC both finished on 50 points.

With Cillian Murphy 11th, Alex O’Brien 18th, and Will Byrne 21st, Lucan won on count-back.

No such drama in the women’s team competition where with Breda Smyth third, Ana Barbu fourth and Anne Whelan seventh, Lucan Harriers were comfortable winners ahead of Navan AC and Waterstown Warriors.

A new Lucan-based club called Wolfpack RC was a close fourth.

Other Dublin clubs represented included Donore Harriers, Civil Service AC, Crusaders AC, Love2Run AC, Sanctuary Runners, Polish Runners Club Ireland, Esker Running Group and Blackrock AC.
