Tidy Towns group ‘very close to being launched’

A TALLAGHT Tidy Towns group is “very close to being launched”, according to the voluntary chairperson of Tallaght Community Council (TCC), Liz Kennedy.

Ms Kennedy made this announcement at TCC’s AGM last week, where she added that Tallaght is the only village in South Dublin County without a Tidy Towns group.

“We intend to change that very soon,” she said towards the end of her opening address at the AGM, where she explained that TCC will be looking for helpers of all ages and abilities next month “to join us in getting this off the ground”.

Aside from this, the AGM featured the results of a community council vote, where the voluntary chairperson and vice chairperson of TCC for the coming year were announced.

Liz Kennedy, who was voluntary chairperson of TCC for 2021/2022 has been re-appointed into the role for the coming year.

Albert Perris, who served as the group’s heritage officer last year, was appointed vice chair of TCC.

The current members of TCC had voting rights for the aforementioned positions, however it was noted in the AGM that no nominations were received for new members to join the committee this year.

The group also detailed several of their initiatives over the past year, such as a Covid time capsule project, the development of pocket forests in local schools, their Love Tallaght Outdoors and Leave No Trace initiatives, and the installation of Welcome to Tallaght heritage signs.

Other points of interest included their rotating Tallaght Person of the Year for 2021/2022, as the pandemic disrupted the normal process for awarding the position, and also their Certificates of Appreciation initiative.

Additionally, the group continued to express their reservations about the number of SHDs in Tallaght, which they are concerned would lend themselves to a “transient” community and would impede young people from living in the area and setting down roots in Tallaght.
