By Hayden Moore

LOCAL schools teams and supporters left Croke Park with smiles on their faces on Wednesday after a largely successful second day of the Cumann na mBunscoil hurling and camogie finals.

In a battle between two local outfits for the Sciath Bui Phuirseil, Terenure’s St Pius X GNS overcame St Colmcilles of Knocklyon 4-3 to 0-1 in front of the Hill.

Players from Gaelscoil Inse Chor celebrate winning the Sciath Nuri final

Two rapid fire scores from Elaine Waters and Joy Ralph got the game into motion with a goal and a point for St Colmcilles before Emma Moran responded with a point of her own for St Pius in the hotly contested first half.

Jenny Maguire showed her metal at half-back and Millie Larkin was put to the test in between the sticks.

Yet Terenure stepped it up a gear in the second half when their injured captain, Niamh Meagher came off the bench to spur her side on with Lucy Somers and Ali Mullen both hitting goals, and Joy Ralph carding an extra 1-2.

GAELSCOIL Inse Chór raised the Corn Nuri for the third time in a row, beating St Raphaela 4-4 to 1-0.

It was a dominant performance for the Inchicore side as they prevented their opponents from scoring up until the last minute, Liliane Delsart De Búrca putting in an assertive player of the match performance from midfield.

Emily Nic Lochlainn guided Gaelscoil Inse Chór to victory, scoring 1-3 from centre forward, with Ruby Whittaker, Ella Ní hAicín, and De Búrca accounting for the rest of the scores.

THE very last púc of the game secured victory for Scoil Mhuire of Rathfarnham as they battled with Hollypark BNS to win 5-6 to 3-11 and lift the Corn Herald.

It was a Dillon Timbs free that broke the deadlock in the opening minutes and he went on to score 2-4 throughout the game to lead his side to their first cup final since 2002.

The sides went into half-time with Scoil Mhuire a goal ahead, and it took scores from Michael Kennedy, Rian Meaney, Seán Keary and Tiernan Kennedy to keep the sides level in the second-half.

Ballyboden St Enda’s Timbs caught the sliotar in the middle of the park and smashed the ball home to ensure there would not be a repeat of last year’s final when they were beaten by a point after extra time against Bishop Galvin.

SCOIL Treasa lost out to Gaelscoil Taobh na Coille in the Corn JM O’Brien Final, two quickfire goals at the death deciding it- 3-5 to 3-8.

Luke Perry opened the scoring for Scoil Treasa with a goal and that was followed by a point when captain Jay Kelly slotted over the bar from midfield.

The lead was short-lived though as Gaelscoil Taobh na Coille faught back against the Ballycullen side to take the lead by half-time.

Two standout performances from Fionn Murphy and Daragh Delaney got their side back in front scoring 1-2 each, but their spirit simply was not enough as the persistent Gaelscoil Taobh na Coille ended the game with a goal to spare.

IT WAS not all heartbreak for Scoil Treasa as the school’s camogie team routed Garran Mhuire 8-8 to 2-1 to lift the Corn Olly Quinlan.

Charlie Murphy and Neasa Codd were on fire, hitting 2-2 and 3-2 respectively in what was third time lucky for their team

Indeed they played in their third final in a row, and finally lifted the cup after losing out in the years previous.

Grace Carruth, Caoimhe Joyce, and Hannah Leahy got on the scoresheet with Katie Murphy bagging a goal and two points to guide them to victory.

Some more heartbreak came later on in the day when Loreto Primary School, Rathfarnham contested the Corn B Uí Phuirseil against Scoil Bhríde and lost 3-5 to 1-2.

A frustrating first half saw Loreto repeatedly pull shots wide of the mark

Three players on the Dublin Development Squads – Abbie Fitzgerald, Enya Kennedy, and Julie Brady came alive in the second half for Loreto, with Sarah Furlong getting a goal and Fitzgerald registering two points.

ST KEVIN’S Kilnamanagh raised their first Hurling Shield title in some 30 years after they dished out a 9-9 to 1-3 defeat to Glasnevin Educate Together in the Sciath Sean O Rinn Final on Wednesday.

Darragh McKenna emerged with a tally of 2-2 to his name while full forward Adam Clancy twice hit the back of the net and co-captain Sam Sheridan accounted for 1-4.

Wing back Cian O’Neill served up two sublime goals in this match while Sean McBridge hit 1-2 and the team’s other co-captain Aaron Holland led superbly from the back.

Having reached the hurling semi finals over the previous two years, Kevin’s will be delighted to have gone all the way this year as the sport enjoys a huge revival in the school under Daniel McCann, Emer Maher, Michael Regan and Principal James Murray.

The school has also benefited strongly from the support of local clubs St Kevin’s Kilian’s and Faughs.

SCOIL Santain, while no strangers to Cumann na mBunscol success, scooped their first Senior Hurling title after they comfortably beat Gaelscoil Inchicore in the Corn Sean O Rinn Final.

Midfielder Conchur Ó Braonáin and  full forward Tomás Ó Mordha inflicted the bulk of the damage on Inchicore in terms of scoring while at the other end, goalkeeper and captain Riain Ó Crollaí was very solid and even managed to score a goal when he played outfield in the second period.

Full back Warren Ó Mealláin was very impressive as was corner back Eoghan Ó Braonáin who registered 2-2.

Inchicore, to their credit, kept going and struck over five points through Fiach Lupton (0-4) and Tadhg MacAidha while Zack O’Neill and goalkeeper Oisin O Brion worked hard as did Senan Lupton, Liliane Delsart de Búrca and Oisin O Bairéid.
