The Clondalkin side were rearing to go and came flying out of the blocks with Whelan finding the net twice and splitting the posts in quick succession – the best score of which came when she beat three players to rattle the net.

Skerries found their rhythm midway through the first half and by the interval they were 2-3 to 2-2 ahead.

Moving Megan Hoyte from wing-forward into full-forward after the break paid off for Towers after she found the net while Holly Gregg extended their lead with her side’s fourth goal.

A clearance from wing-back Niamh McGrattan was collected by Gregg, deployed at centre-forward, and she made a darting run towards goal to blast the ball into the top right corner.

With four-minutes left on the clock, Towers were eight-points to the good, but a goal and a point from Harps cut the deficit in half.

McGrattan led the backline as Skerries laid siege on their goal and a superb stop by goalkeeper Nora Aja prevented a sure-fire goal to keep their side in the lead by the final whistle.
