Treble delight for Davis girls

THOMAS Davis junior ladies football team had plenty to shout about when they secured their third trophy of the season by winning the Cup title after defeating Na Fianna 5-9 to 3-4.

Having won the Go Ahead ‘G’ Championship and Division Nine league earlier in the season, the final of the cup competition against Na Fianna D played under lights on Kiltipper Road served up a very exciting game, despite the poor playing conditions.

The home side got off to a flying start with Caithlin Staunton scoring a goal, followed by a point from Nicole Scott to settle their side.

The Mobhi Road outfit settled and got a number of scores themselves before a further two goals and a point from Caithlin Staunton along with a brace of points from Georgia Plowman left Davis’ in the lead at half time by 3-4 to 1-3.

The second half was a tight tense tussle with both teams playing excellent football, with superb inter link play from Holly Byrne, Rachel Mc Hugh, Karla Plowman, Sophie Palmer and Nicola Douch.

These moves resulted in further goals from Nicole Scott and Sophie Palmer before Na Fianna added a further 2-2 mid-way through the second half to close the gap.

Karin Sweeney and Laura Brothwood defended superbly and were well supported by Emma Kennedy, Hannah Prendergast and Alex Giglione closing down numerous attacks to keep Na fianna scores to a minimal in the second half.

Nicole Scott kicked the last three points of the game as Rachel McHugh accepted the cup as captain, finishing off a fine year the for Mayo native.
