Vacant land will deliver 2,000 houses

By Maurice Garvey
UP TO 39 hectares of vacant land in Park West and Cherry Orchard has been identified by Dublin City Council as a key site in delivering 2,000 new homes alongside a new town centre.
Any such development, is dependent on the outcome of the Park West - Cherry Orchard Local Area Plan (LAP), which the city council are preparing as an objective under the current city development plan (2016-2022).

Overall, the proposed plan covers an area of approximately 234 hectares and incorporates proposals for social economic, housing, transport and education.
Extensive consultation has been carried out in the community by DCC over the last number of months, to determine what residents want for the area.
Up to 98 submissions were received by DCC from residents, local groups, and politicians.
Key themes put forward by residents include improving the physical appearance of the area, development of a town centre, improving transport links, delivering a mix of housing and local employment opportunities.
The LAP is currently in the pre-draft preparation stage, and further consultation will take place between the LAP project team and stakeholders and State bodies over the next two months.
At the recent Dublin South Central area committee, councillors agreed the LAP is a potential “game changer” and could transform an area that has suffered from a lack of investment through successive administrations. All submissions received have been reviewed and will be taken into consideration in the preparation of the Draft LAP.
The proposed Draft LAP will be presented to the councillors at an area committee late August/early September, prior to its statutory display, envisaged to be later in 2018.
