Walk into the Light at Bohernabreena reservoir this weekend
By Mary Dennehy
AN EARLY morning 5km walk through the Bohernabreena reservoir is taking place on October 7, with all donations on the day going to the Tree of Hope organisation.
Staged for World Mental Health Month, Walk into the Light is open to everyone, with the concept of “walking and talking” at the heart of the community-led event.
Last year more than 400 people took part in the supportive event, which is organised locally by Shane Smith Fitness and the Tree of Hope team.
Promoting the event online, Shane Smith said: “Please save the date, tag [and tell] friends and help us make it a special and memorable morning again.
“And even if you've nobody to come along with I guarantee that you won't be walking alone.
“Many arrive by themselves and before long are walking with a group.
“The simple concept of walking and talking is to the fore.”
He added: “We do this walk for the wonderful Tree of Hope team who do incredible work for mental health in our area.”
Noeleen Fulham of Tree of Hope told The Echo that no registration is required, with people encouraged to simply turn up on the day.
Participants are also invited to carry a photo of a loved one or to bring a yellow balloon with a special message on it.
St Anne’s GAA Club is supporting the walk, which will leave the Bohernabreena-based clubhouse at 6am on Saturday, October 7 and return to the clubhouse after the walk loops through the beautiful Vallery of Glenamsole for refreshments.
The walk, which will pause at the Tree of Hope that was planted in the reservoir two years ago, is suitable for people of all ages and families, with safety stewards and guides on hand during the course of the event.
Organisers have thanked the local business community for its support and generosity, with plenty of goodies on the morning for participants.
