Walshe and Coyne in for big championships
BOTH Ellen Walshe and Niamh Coyne have been officially named in Swim Ireland squads that will contest the European Junior Championships in Israel from June 28 to July 2 and the World Junior Championships in Indiana-polis from August 23-28.
Templeogue swimmer Walshe was in superb form at the Irish Open Swimm-ing Championships in the NAC earlier this month.
The 15-year-old competitor went top of the podium in 200m Butterfly, finished second in the 100m Butterfly and carded two bronze medals in 200IM and 400IM – the latter also being inside the European Junior QT – while she also won the Junior 200BC final.
Meanwhile Coyne from Tallaght Swim Club emerged runner-up in the Women’s 50m and 100m Breaststroke Finals.
“Following a highly successful Irish Open Championships last week, it was clear that our coaches and our athletes have embraced the concept of ‘right performance-right time’ and that we have a body of talent here that is truly capable of challenging on a continental and world stage” said National Performance Director Jon Rudd.
“These are focused teams and these athletes display many of the attributes that you would expect and want at this level, with some of them potentially featuring in our World Champion-ships team when we announce it later this month” he added.
