“We’ll do what we have to do to win” -McCabe
BRAY Wanderers hitman Gary McCabe insists the Seagulls will be going all out to remain, at least, joint second in the SSE Airtricity League when they welcome Shamrock Rovers to the Carlisle Grounds tonight.
The Hoops will be desperate to secure another three points to help preserve their waning hopes of catching runaway leaders Cork City, but they will be coming up against an in-form Bray outfit that has won their last three league games, including, most recently, their clash with defending champions Dundalk in Oriel Park.
And leading their charge is Tallaght man McCabe whose two penalties in Friday’s 3-1 win has seen him overtake Cork’s Sean Maguire as the league’s top scorer.
Looking ahead to the arrival of Stephen Bradley’s troops tomorrow, McCabe insisted “We have our plan for Friday”.
“We want to kill off Rovers’ season. A win for us would peg them [Rovers] back a good bit, but we have to concentrate on ourselves.
“We’re joint second at the moment and we want to stay there, so, if that means killing off Rovers’ season or anybody else’s, we’ll do what we have to do to win.”
McCabe is not surprised at how well the Seagulls have been doing, adding “This is exactly where we wanted to be and exactly where I thought we should be.
“With the quality of the players that we have, I would have been disappointed if we were anywhere below where we’re at now.
“We are scoring some amount of goals. Our top four players [in attack] all have different strengths and we’re doing well” he said.
Delighted with their win over Stephen Kenny’s Lilywhites last week the clinical midfielder said “It was a massive result. It sent out a message that we are where we want to be. To beat to champions in their home was huge.
“We had game plan set out. It was well thought out and we actually sat back and let them have most of the possession.
“They tried to force the game and when it didn’t work out and it got to halftime 0-0, they got more and more frustrated.
“Dundalk are great at keeping the ball so we let them have it, but when they misplaced a pass we broke on top of them very quickly” he recalled.
