A white St Patrick’s Day is being predicted this year, with Met Eireann forecasts saying there will be snow showers during the “very cold” weather this weekend. Despite this, the show must go on for the annual 4 Districts Parade, who are celebrating their 12th year.

The 4 Districts Parade comprises of groups from the communities of Rathcoole, Saggart, Brittas and Newcastle.

The Parade, which kicks off at 1pm, will begin at Rathlawns in Rathcoole and go through Saggart Village before ending at St Mary’s GFC.

The Grand Marshall for this year’s parade is singer/songwriter Sean Keane from The Chieftains.

Mr Keane has lived in the Rathcoole area for several years and his grandchildren are involved in local sports clubs, Commercials GAA and St Mary’s GFC.

In its 12th year, the 2018 parade’s theme is “Animal Antics”, with prizes for the best float up for grabs.

The Parade Committee say that the focus will be on a number of children’s groups who will have representation on the day including GAA, soccer, rugby, martial arts, dancing, scouts, schools and playschools.

Local groups taking part

Sharon Redmond, who is part of the organising committee, said: “There will be over 15 local groups taking part as well as lots of businesses and individual participants.”

The Laurence O’Toole Pipe Band will make a return this year and there will be a colour party led by men from the Roger Casement Aerodrome.

The downstairs bar in St Mary’s GFC clubhouse is open from 1pm, where there will be a children’s disco, entertainment by Reuben from RTE junior, Irish Dancing exhibits, arts and crafts and face-painting.

Outside on the grounds, there will be amusements and live entertainment by the Brookfield Music Club. Hot food, coffee/tea, ice-cream, candyfloss and popcorn are all available for purchase. The upstairs lounge will have live entertainment throughout the day.

Updates and news on the parade can be found at the “4 Districts St Patrick’s Day Parade” Facebook page.
