Winning start to new season by JKS Tallaght
JKS TALLAGHT opened the new karate season with an excellent showing at the National JKS Ireland Inter-Club Competition in Swords recently.
The club fielded a squad of eight members, and all had a good day taking home eight medals and coming 3rd nationally in the medal table.
In their first ever competition Amelia Maher took home a bronze medal in Beginners Kata 12 years and under, while Gintaras Aleknavicius took a silver medal home in the Boys Kata 12 years and under, Red-Green belt.
In Boys Kata 12 years and under, Purple to Black belt, teammates Peter Lynott and Seamus O Callaghan came up against each other in the quarter finals.
Peter just edged Seamus out to third place and a bronze medal, while he progressed to the final, eventually taking silver for his performance.
Xheims (James) Qepi had tough competition in a large Boys Kata 13 to 18 years, Purple to Black Belt category but took bronze for his performance of Heian Yondan.
Like Xheims (James), Yasmine Lynott had tough competition in the Girls 13 to 18 years, Purple to Black Belt category.
Yasmine took home Bronze for the club, being edged out by the eventual category winner.
In Girls Kumite 9-12 years All Grades, Isabella Maher fought well to secure a silver second place medal while in Boys Kumite 9-12 years, Purple to Black, Peter Lynott secured Bronze in a tough category.
Finally in Boys Kumite 13-16 years Yellow to Black Belt, Xheims (James) Qepi narrowly missed the gold medal by ½ point and took home silver for his efforts.
“It’s very early in the season and these are great results from the students” Philip Sensei said.
“Most of the kids have just returned to training after the summer break, so these results are great and will be built on during the coming season.
“They all performed really well, and I am very proud of them.”
