Witness appeal launched as man remains in critical condition after falling into canal

Gardai are seeking the public’s help after a man was pulled from the Grand Canal in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The 23-year-old man, who was visiting Dublin for the All-Ireland Hurling Final, got into difficulty while in the canal, but was eventually rescued and taken to St James’ Hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

Gardai are looking to speak with anyone who may have witnessed the incident, especially a man and woman who came to the assistance of the man.

In a statement released this afternoon, a Garda spokesperson said: “Gardai at Kevin Street are seeking the assistance of any persons who may have witnessed an incident at the canal at Portobello Harbour, Dublin 8.

“The incident occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning, 3rd September, 2017 when a 23-year-old man got into difficulty in the canal and was subsequently removed to St James’ Hospital where he remains in critical condition.

“The man had travelled to Dublin from Galway with friends to attend the All Ireland Hurling Final on Sunday.  He was separated from friends when the incident occurred.

“Gardai at Kevin Street are anxious to speak with any persons who may have witnessed the incident, (especially a male and female who came to the assistance of the young man) or who can assist the investigation to contact Kevin Street Garda Station on 01-6669400, the Garda Confidential Line 1 800 666 111 or any Garda Station.
