
WMAI squad take Four Nations Cup in Tallaght
WADO Martial Arts Ireland emerged overall winners of the recent WMAI Four Nations Cup Tournament they played host to in Tallaght Leisure Centre.
The competition which attracted entries from England, Scotland, Wales, and Romania as well as Ireland, saw 170 competitors and 12 teams battle it out for podium places.
The WMAI squad, made up of members of both the Newcastle and Rathangan Schools of Karate, scooped a haul of nine gold, eight silver and 15 bronze medals in individual and team kumite and kata events.
Newcastle Coach Paul Brennan picked up gold in his Veterans Kata division before playing his part in a bronze medal win for the All Styles Kata team.
There was a double gold for Ben Dunne in the Kumite Male 4th Kyu and below Under 18 and Kumite Team divisions while his Newcastle club-mate Stephen Naughton returned home with five medals including two gold in Vets Kumite Over 46 years and Kumite Team.
Ian Coughlin was just as prolific, also picking up five medals and making a trip to the top of the podium for the Kumite Male Team All Grades Over 18 competition.
Eoghan Foley took bronze in the Kumite 4th Kyu and Under 18 section while Gary Keegan earned gold in the Vets Kumite 35-45 Years and silver in the 46 and Over.
In the Cadets section, Newcastle’s Oisin Brennan emerged top from the Kumite 4th Kyu and Under (15-17 years) with clubmate Arek Diciow finishing runner-up.
In the Junior class there were bronze medal wins for Oscar Brennan (Kumite Boys 4th Kyu and Under 8-9 years), Harvey Cullen (Kumite Boys All-Grades Under 7), Kristian Hyland (Kumite Boys 4th Kyu and Under 8-9) and Daniel Keegan (Kumite Boys All-Grades Under 7).
Rathangan members also made their mark in this tournament with Mia Kearney, Morgan Kearney, Sophie Doherty, Ella McLoughlin, Reece Dowling and Rose Kelly all reaching the podium after superb performances.
