Securing Sport Ireland funding to the tune of €20,000, the Tallaght man will require every cent of it and more as he bids to secure the most favourable ranking possible for the upcoming Olympics.

The trip to Sweden will provide an opportunity for valuable bonus points for all athletes from the European region and the event is expected to attract up to 2500 competitors.

Following this, Woolley will head to Florida for the US Open on February 27 followed by the Sofia Open in Bulgaria on March 8.

His clubmate Emma Cahill will be the first SDTKD athlete in competition this year as she travels out to Germany for the World Taekwondo Europe Generation 24 Championships from February 1-2.

The winner of her region will be invited to the Grand Final in Bosnia & Herzegovina at the end of the year.

Cahill will also contest the -41kg Cadet division at the President’s Cup and remain on in Sweden for the Helsingborg Open before following the team over to the US Open for her third event in a fortnight.

Also in action in Florida will be Woolley’s sparring partner David Phelan, who is still eligible to compete in both the junior and senior ranks and will do so at 63kg.
