Work starts on vacant Orchard Lane facility

LONG overdue works have started at the vacant Orchard Lane community unit in Clondalkin Village.

In 2003, planning permission was granted to Kelland Homes for the Orchard Lodge apartment complex, which included provision for a senior citizen centre.

Local groups met with councillors to discuss plans for the community unit

However, the latter aspect failed to materialise, and there have been many calls over the years for the unit to be used for senior related groups, including Clondalkin Men’s Shed – who ultimately ended up moving into a former portacabin on Watery Lane

Over the last couple of years, the legal process of transferring the vacant unit from the management company to South Dublin County Council has been ongoing.

At the recent Clondalkin area meeting, the council said work has started and will take a couple of weeks.

The council said: “Consultants engaged by the owners to advise on compliance have requested that remedial work be carried out on the unit.

The council has been informed that the works have commenced – week commencing January 6 – and that will take a couple of weeks.

The expectation then is that the owners will be in a position to meet the council’s requirements by submitting the outstanding compliance certification.”

A viewing of the unit can be arranged for local councillors and representatives of community groups, according to the council.
