
Year in review 2019: June

JUNE was a busy month. The weather was more hit and miss than the previous year. There was plenty going on with charity events and Tallafest at the end of the months.
The Echo reported that the derelict former Gallaher’s site at the junction of Airton Road and Greenhills Road has been earmarked for residential development.

Gallaher’s was a cigarette manufacturing plant which shut in 2003, and in recent years the derelict building has been damaged as a result of two fires on the premises.
Three years after his near-fatal brain injury, Tom Moran, the Chief Executive of the Red Cow Moran Hotel, abseiled off the side of his hotel to help raise
€200,000 towards building a dedicated Brain Disease and Research Centre at St James’s Hospital.
Tom and his family were joined by 130 thrillseekers and some celebrities including Ray D’Arcy and former boxer, Bernard Dunne.

Over in the Council Chamber, Lucan Councillor, Vicki Casserly was elected Mayor of South Dublin County.
Greenhills man John Dennan got a pleasant surprise when he went to what he believed was a photography prize-giving event at the Maldron Hotel in Newlands Cross. Instead John was greeted by the sight of his family and friends and an exhibition of his photography.

At the end of May, Patrick Kelly who was fondly known as Padge, passed away at the age of 32.
Padge lived with Motor Neuron Disease for 16 years and Mary Dennehy reported that a fundraising campaign is now underway to raise funds for a cough assist machine at Tallaght University Hospital, in memory of Padge.
Veronica Guerin was murdered 23 years ago on the Naas Road.

This month, Councillor Francis Timmons called on South Dublin County Council to clean up the area around her memorial. The site was later cleaned up by the Council.
This month, Ballyfermot got five new gardai, Clondakin got four, Ronanstown got two and Sundrive Road got three.
Over in Clondalkin, Una Maguire was appointed President of Clondalkin RFC for the 2019/20 season.
Ms Maguire (36), a former player at the club before her move into coaching, took over the reins from outgoing President Ciaran Collins. It is the first time CRFC’s 46-year history that a female has been made President.

In the Central Criminal Court a jury convicted two 14-year-old boys of murdering schoolgirl Anastasia Kriegel, whose naked body was found in an abandoned farmhouse three days after she went missing in 2018.
Croí Ro Naofa GAA Club have had to put up with 14 cars burnt out on their pitches in Killinarden so far this year.
Tallafest, the annual celebration of all things Tallaght was a roaring success.
