Year in Review 2020: October

October was a month when the Irish government announced a second six-week lockdown, which was a huge blow for hundreds of local businesses.

The first lockdown was a novelty and occurred during nice weather but October would be more difficult. Halloween was not like it was in previous years and the fireworks started much earlier than usual, but thankfully the holiday passed relatively peacefully.

Rathcoole husband and wife team Louise and Gary Ryan jog and cycle 30km from their home to the Coombe and back to raise funds for the hospital, in memory of their daughter Grace who was stillborn at 22 weeks in June. (October 1 edition)

TUH Leona robot surgery twitter 1

Tallaght University Hospital completed its first robot assisted surgery.

The robotic surgery was completed thanks to a €2m investment by the Tallaght University Hospital Foundation and Leona the robot. (October 22 edition)

LIFE Gavin and Jade1 1

Springfield resident Gavin Leonard evolved his blog Not Just a Princess to a series of books that has sold over 20,000 copies.

The blog started originally to document the adventures Gavin would go on with his young daughter Jade. (October 1 edition)

Zoe Miller 1

Bestselling author Zoë Miller releases her eleventh novel, ‘The Perfect Sister’.

The Knocklyon mother-of-three stayed true to her suspenseful and intriguing style of writing in the novel, which sees sisters Alice and Holly become entangled in an accidental death case. (October 8 edition)

The Square celebrates its 30th anniversary – having first opened its doors to the public in October 1990. (October 22 edition)

Tommy Gilsen 1

GREAT sadness came over the JADD community on the news of the death of founder Tommy Gilson who died in October with his loving family by his side.

He was one of the early activists responding to the emerging drug issues in Tallaght in the 1990s and was the founder of the JADD Project in 1996. (October 29 edition)
