A MAJOR research survey into life in Tallaght West is beginning this week, with more than 1,000 households being visited across the areas of Jobstown, Fettercairn, Killinarden and Brookfield.

Co-ordinated by the Childhood Development Initiative (CDI), the aim of the survey is to gather information on people’s experiences of living in Tallaght West and to identify needs in the community for both children and families.

The study, which is called How is our Neighbourhood?, will involve a team of 16 field researchers knocking on doors across Tallaght West, until the end of April, and asking people to participate in the survey, which will take about 20 minutes to complete.

Participants will be asked a number of questions about, for example, their sense of belonging to their neighbourhood, their likes and dislikes about where they live, and what they believe can be done to improve their neighbourhood.

Led by CDI’s Research and Evaluation Officer Dr Bernadette Rock, the research is a follow-up on two previous pieces of research co-ordinated by CDI in Tallaght West, How are our Kids? (2004) and How are our Families? (2012).

All of the studies intend to find out what the needs of communities in Tallaght West and use this information to create and grow relevant and tailored services.

Dr Bernadette Rock said: “I would encourage people to answer the survey as accurately and comprehensively as they can.

“It is completely confidential and names are not retained.

“It will help in our understanding of the neighbourhoods in Tallaght West and the needs of people living there.”

She added: “[The previous bodies of research carried out by CDI] were used to inform how CDI and other local service providers could best meet the needs of the community and was also brought to the attention of national policy makers.”
