22 locations to recycle your Christmas tree locally

By Aideen O’Flaherty

Don’t let all of your Christmas cheer go to waste, remember to reduce and reuse your festive packaging.

According to South Dublin County Council, every year each household generates an estimated 124 kilograms of packaging, with a notable increase in waste production during the Christmas period.

The good news is that you can reduce your environmental footprint this season by making a number of small changes to how you handle packaging and serve food.

The council has advised people to tackle their food waste by approaching food servings differently, for example by serving food in bowls instead of plates and ensuring children’s portion sizes are appropriate.

When it comes to cleaning up after Christmas dinner, remember to put recyclable packaging in your green bin for collection, while glass can be environmentally disposed of in one the county’s 62 bring banks.

If you have any items with plugs or a battery, Clondalkin’s Recycle IT can dispose of it. You can find out more about them online at recycleit.ie.

The Ballymount Civic Amenity Centre will be open on Christmas Eve, and also December 27, 28, 29 and 30.

It’s open until 3pm on New Year’s Eve, and remains closed on New Year’s Day with normal opening hours resuming on January 2.

Arrangements have also been made for free Christmas tree recycling at various locations throughout the county from Wednesday 4th January to Friday 13th January 2017. For further information, visit www.sdcc.ie.
