24 residents take part in 12-hour relay to raise funds for St James’s

UP TO 24 residents will take part in a 12-hour relay as part of a campaign to raise funds for St James’s Hospital.
Cherry Orchard resident David Kavanagh came up with the idea of raising funds for PPE (personal protective equipment) for frontline workers in St James’s.

“The main thing is safety and complying with social distancing,” said David.
“With 24 people involved, everyone does a half hour each. Each participant tries to raise some funds but there is no pressure.”
The campaign also includes some residents shaving their heads from home.
An initial target of €2k has already been smashed and David is hopeful of hitting the €3k mark.
“It seems to me people are more generous than I thought,” said David, who is employed at Building Staff Solutions.
“Two groups of residents from Ballyfermot and Cherry Orchard Green hosted bingo nights and donated money.
“In my work at BSS, we are busier than ever. They made a donation and we also got support from local businesses Shampoo Hair and Beauty, Sarah’s Beauty Room, Fix my iPhone and Lee’s Barbers.
“The fundraising page was set up direct through St James’s Hospital. Some GoFundMe pages take 10 per cent off the amount raised. We wanted all the money to go towards St James’s.”
The relay takes place on Saturday, May 23 in the park beside Cherry Orchard Church, starting at 8am and finishing at approximately 8pm.
