ONE of the largest housebuilders in the country has withdrawn their plans for a 429-unit apartment development at Cooldown Commons and Fortunestown in Citywes.

As previously reported in The Echo, Cairn Homes submitted their fast-track planning application to An Bord Pleanála on December 21, outlining plans for the construction of nine apartment blocks, ranging in height from one- to 15-storeys.

It was proposed that the nine apartment blocks would house 111 one-bed units, 288 two-bed units, and 30 three-bed units.

Provision of 286 car parking spaces, 650 bicycle parking spaces, and public and communal open spaces, was included in the plans.

One aspect of the proposed open spaces included a public plaza adjoining the Fortunestown Luas stop, while permission was also sought for a pedestrian bridge from the proposed development to a public park that is currently under construction.

The applicant also sought to amend planning permission that was granted to them in 2018 for a 459-unit development at Cooldown Commons, to replace 32 permitted duplex apartments in that development with internal road and open spaces.

The subject site previously received planning permission from South Dublin County Council in 2018, when developer Cedarvale Commercial Ltd got the go-ahead to develop a 129-unit mixed residential development.

In their application concerning the site, Cairn Homes stated that the proposed 429-unit development would replace the previously granted planning permission for the site.

However, the developer notified An Bord Pleanála that they were withdrawing their application on Thursday April 1.

Citywest and surrounding areas are already a hub of construction activity for Cairn Homes, who have previously secured planning permission for the development of 40 dwellings in Adamstown, Lucan, the development of 417 apartments at Cooldown Commons in Citywest, and a new public park in Adamstown called Tobermaclugg Park.
