A contentious €9.5m 40-unit older persons’ housing development on greenspace in Fernwood and Maplewood in Springfield, Tallaght, is expected to be completed by October 2021.

In 2018, South Dublin County Council released plans to construct 23 homes in Fernwood Park, and 17 homes with a community room in Maplewood Park.

During the Part 8 public consultation period for the plans, a total of 596 submissions were made, many of which expressed concern about the loss of greenspace in the area if the development got the green light.

The St Mark’s Residents’ Association held well-attended protests and public meetings about the plans in advance of the councillors’ vote on the development.

In October 2018, 26 councillors from South Dublin County Council voted in favour of the plans, meaning the development could go ahead.

In a recently released update on the housing development, which is to be managed by Clúid Housing upon completion, the council confirmed that the development will consist of 35 one-bed and five two-bed bungalows.

The construction work is to be carried out by Forrme Construction over a period of 15 months, with expected completion in October 2021, and the nominations for people to get a home in the development have all come from the council’s housing list.
