Adeleke storms to 100m gold at European Under 20s

TALLAGHT Athletic Club’s Rhasidat Adeleke has stormed to 100m gold at the European Under 20 Athletics Championships in Tallinn.

Her time of 11.34 was her fastest in this competition, having won both her heat and semi final in 11.37 and 11.38 respectively.

Bursting out of Lane Five, Adeleke always looked to be on course for victory in the final, racing home ahead of closest challengers Ivana Ilic (11.42) of Serbia and Great Britain’s Joy Eze  (11.44).

This gold medal win is the latest feat in a superb season so far for the Tallaght woman who broke Phil Healy’s Irish 200m record earlier in the year when she clocked 22.96 at the Big 12 Championships in Manhattan in May.

The triumph also follows up on her European Under 18 200m gold medal in Hungary back in 2018 and the World Under 20 silver she won with the Ireland Womens’ 4x100m Relay team in Finland just weeks earlier.

The following year she carded double gold in the 100m and 200m and the European Youth Olympics Festival in Baku ahead of her eventual move to University of Texas.

Adeleke will not be stopping at 100m gold in Tallinn and will now be turning her attention to repeating that feat over the 200m distance.
