All-Ireland Schools Track and Field Championship success for athletes

THE All-Ireland Schools Track and Field Championships took centre stage last week at Tullamore Harriers Stadium with a number of local athletes involved.

Over 1000 athletes from 300 schools participated in the final with success for local athletes who piucked up medals.

Donore Harriers Emily Bolton was representing Mount Sackville in the Intermediate Girls 3,000m and she secured gold in a time of 10:17:65.

The Mount Sackville athlete would return later in the day to claim gold in the 1500m in a time of 4.35:07.

Tallaght’s Athletic’s Club member Sean Aigboboh who was representing The High School, Rathgar continued his good run of form by picking up gold in the Senior Boys 100m in 10.90.

There was a great battle between Saoirse Fitzgerald from Lucan Community College and Pia Langton (Loreto Kilkenny) in the senior girl’s 800m race, with the Lucan Harriers member stretching clear around the final bend to cross in 2:10:10.

The senior boy’s race was billed as one of the races of the day and it proved to be just that with the hugely talented pair of Tallaght AC’s Cormac Dixon, wearing the Holy Family Community School Rathcoole colours came out tops in the seniors boys race seeing off Sean Cronin from Colaiste Ghlór Na Mara rounding the final bend side-by-side to finish in a time of in 4:02.43, followed by Cronin in 4:03.47.

Another Holy Family Community School Rathcoole student Jacob Ciomek won the u16 boys mile while Seán Owens of Colaiste Éanna, on his way to winning the senior boys 100m hurdles.

Siún Quinn from St Colmcille’s Community School took silver in the Senior Girls High Jump, posting 1.70 after she was edged out by Ava Rochford (Rice College Ennis) who registered 1.75m.
