Almost 30,000 people pass through new library portals

Almost 30,000 people have walked through the doors of the state-of-the-art Castletymon Library since it opened 12 months ago.

The newest branch of South Dublin libraries, the impressive facility celebrated its first birthday on Saturday with the celebrations featuring the acrobat troupe the Daring Dames, lively sessions with traditional musicians and arts, crafts and information from local community groups.

The space has quickly become a central hub for community activity and over 400 people braved the rain to attend the festivities.

The day was made possible with support from the Dormant Accounts fund and South Dublin County Council Arts Office.

Mayor Emma Murphy took time out of her busy schedule to say a few words about the library and remind people how important it is to have a library card.

“Public libraries are incredibly important centres of civic participation and social inclusion and provide equality of access for all,” said senior librarian Sarah McHugh. “Staff are thrilled at how quickly the new library has been embraced by the Tymon community and we are delighted to be part of such a welcoming, vibrant area”

The past year has seen language classes, coding workshops, book clubs and music sessions amongst the wide range of activities which have taken place in the library.

All library events are free of charge and it costs nothing to sign up for a card. Anyone can join, just pop into your nearest branch with photo ID and proof of address and it only takes two minutes to get started.

Castletymon Library has a busy schedule of events lined up for the autumn months, with toddler mornings, activities for local schools, digital literacy classes,  and music workshops beginning in September.

Details of our dedicated programme of events for older adults featuring art workshops and music sessions are available from the library.
