The online giant said Amazon Logistics will work with six independent delivery companies, who will hire more than 150 drivers between them to collect parcels from the building.

Packages will be shipped to the delivery station in Greenogue from Amazon fulfilment and sortation centres, loaded onto vehicles, and delivered to customers in the Dublin area.

It is the first time Amazon has hired staff in Ireland to handle online orders.

Amazon told The Echo it is investing in transport infrastructure and innovation to increase supply chain capacity and provide customers with faster delivery options.

This includes tech developments such as intelligent route planning, to support associates working at the delivery station and drivers who deliver parcels to customers.

Kerry-Anne Lawlor, Country Director for Amazon Logistics, said: “We are excited to open a delivery station in Dublin where Amazon’s 20 plus years of operational expertise, technology advancements and investment in transportation infrastructure is enabling faster delivery for customers than ever before seven days a week.

“Amazon Logistics adds additional capacity to ensure we continue to meet growing customer demand and will work alongside our existing carrier partners who provide a high-quality service we value.”

It is understood that the US multinational is also engaged in talks to lease two warehouse buildings at Northwest Logistics Park in Finglas – required for a variety of purposes by the internet giant’s web service division.

Amazon has five data centres in Tallaght, including a massive building at the former Jacobs site on Belgard Road.

The company are hiring an extra 75,000 staff to cope with online orders during Covid-19, on top of 100,000 people hired last year.

There are currently more than 2,500 Amazon employees across Ireland.
